Cistern Installation Workshop
Wednesday, October 19
8:30am - 5:00pm
Onslow County Multipurpose Complex, Jacksonville, NC
Eastern North Carolina receives roughly 54 inches of rainfall each year. Unfortunately, this water is not evenly distributed during the times that we could use the water the most. The droughts of the past several summers are proof of that. One solution is to utilize rain barrels and cisterns to capture rainfall from rooftops. Cisterns are a great source of water for non-potable uses, such as irrigation and vehicle washing.
The goal of this workshop is to provide hands-on installation experience for both “dry” and “wet” cistern applications. A total of six 2,500-gallon cisterns are available for installation at the site. Attendees will be divided into groups and assigned a cistern. The target audience is landscapers, contractors, public works staff, and others seeking actual installation experience.
The workshop will:
- Explain the basics of cistern sizing and siting, including lessons learned;
- Provide hands-on experience with two types of installation method;
- Provide installation tips from instructors with experience on a variety of systems across NC; and
- Get feedback from participants on what kind of assistance they need to make rainwater harvesting a reality at their public buildings and/or in their communities.
Attendees will be outside working for most of the day. Please wear appropriate clothing (closed-toe shoes, workboots, working clothes, hat, sunscreen).
This is a FREE workshop! Water, snacks, and lunch will be provided.
