8:45 - 12:30pm

NOAA-NERR Auditorium, Pivers Island, Beaufort

The goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to the interconnectedness between land use choices and water quality. Participants will learn about the major pollutants that degrade water quality; sources of these pollutants; and methods to prevent this degradation, including stormwater management practices and low impact development (LID).

What is Low Impact Development? LID is a site planning, design, implementation, and maintenance program aimed at promoting environmental integrity with development and growth. Low Impact Development integrates stormwater practices into site design using a customized layout for each project. Some of the most commonly used stormwater management practices include: permeable pavement, cisterns, grassed swales, bioretention, rain gardens, and level spreaders. These are small-scale practices that fit unobtrusively into a landscape.

Dwane Jones, with the NC LID Group, will give detailed information on LID as well as on the NC LID Certification Program.

The target audience for this event is planning board members, elected officials, or anyone needing introductory information on water quality and low impact development.

These are FREE workshops!
